What is Cloud Iridescence phenomenon?
- Rainbow Clouds or what is scientifically known as Cloud Iridescence is a rare occurrence in nature which usually happens in altocumulus, cirrocumulus, lenticular and cirrus clouds. Diffraction- the chief event that takes responsibility occurs when small droplets or per se small ice crystals scatter the sun's light.
- The viral cloud video recently seen digs its origin in the Haikou city of China and only a decade back in India too in Bangalore,2013.
- It also shows the representation of pileus clouds.
What are Pileus Clouds?
- Pileus Clouds place themselves over a cumulus or cumulonimbus cloud. Formed above them giving their unique properties.
- They occur when a moist current of air is pushed upwards by the base cloud, then the water vapour from the current gets condensed to depict a wave-like crests, or umbrellas.

The Name Derivation: " Cloud" , "Iridescence".
In Greek Mythology, the word Iris represented the Goddess of Rainbow. So, "Iridescence" or "Irisation" involves a phenomena associated with rainbow like formation in relation to clouds.
