The Context
The Division Bench of Kerala High Court ordered that the wild
elephant roaming at Idduki district — Santhanpara and Chinnakkanal area to be captured
and translocated to Parambikulam Tiger Reserve,
which lies between lies in between the Anamalai Hills and Nelliampathy
Hills of the Southern Western Ghats.
What is Mission Arikompan?
In a bid to capture and train the rogue elephant who has been
raiding rice fields and has even trampled 10 people along with breaking into 60
houses. The Government plans to train it into ‘kumbi’ and use for capturing other
mischievous elephants.
It strolls in the Idduki district which had last year witness
the Neelakurinji bloom after 12 years.
The People’s Concern
Protest has been continual amidst the population of Muthalamada
gram panchayats against the translocation. The joining of MP has also aired the
situation. The place has been in a stand still while the government has a strong
hold on the decision to transfer the elephant.
Efforts by the Authorities
The authorities have been trying for 3 days to put a satellite radio collar for Arikompan before the
supposed translocation. Crates and Jail is being constructed to capture it. However, the government and authority are turning a blind
eye to the protests of the people and seem to stand on their decision.

A Matter of Concern
Such man-human conflict has been widely misinterpreted. While
the projects of development and infrastructure are on a go, the matter of environment
and its flora and fauna and natural habitat should be kept in mind. The Wildlife
Protection Act, 1972 aims to conserve and
protect the wildlife in Indian Constitution, and Mission Elephant which holds a
successful view, yet matters like — Arikompan should be a strong example of its
effectiveness.
